Not heard. Not seen. Not spoken of. Series
I was born in South America and my parents chose to move to the United States to give their children a better life and a higher education. I am thankful and very fortunate that my parents made such a brave and selfless move. I believe we all are given both opportunities and misfortunes in our lifetime, some doors we choose to walk through and other doors we are sent through without choice. My three paintings – Not heard. Not seen. and Not spoken of. – speak of the difficult doors that many have not freely chosen to open.
Life in the United States gave me possibilities and opportunities to make choices in my life. Surrounded by wealthy and culturally diverse cities, young I assumed all was perfect. But today at a closer look, I see the unfortunate living among the fortunate without thought. I see glimpses of abuse, poverty and destruction that most people avoid to hear, to see and to speak of. The contradictions between these two groups are clear and silent.
Within each painting, the red and blue tape symbolize two groups juxtaposed to each other in collaboration as well as conflict. They represent the wealthy and the poor, church and state, the United States two political parties, the fortunate and unfortunate… a reflection of our society and of our government. Even though the gap between these groups continues to grow, I see it as an opportunity rather a misfortune for all to work together to create opportunities and then hope.
