Beyond Cancer Series
These three images for the Beyond Cancer exhibit were inspired by my mother. She died five years ago from a brain tumor. My experience during her illness has been life changing. I felt like an observer of her awakening and then of her acceptance. I painted my most vivid memories of that vulnerable time. ‘Speechless’ reflects the frustration and torment, being unable to speak of what one feels when faced with a terminal illness. ‘Waiting Room’ captures one moment of many when you're sitting and waiting in this strange room where time slows down and people come and go. In this room, I would remember my mother’s phrase, “Once a man twice a child.” With an illness at any age, you return to being a child and to being cared for. I saw it in this room. ‘Full Circle’ reveals how we start our circle with birth, we travel around our path through life and then we must face the end as our circle closes.
